Social Security Payment Schedule for September 2026
Social Security payments in September 2026 will be issued according to the beneficiary’s birth date and the type of benefits they receive.
Most retirement, survivors and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments will arrive on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) follows a different schedule and is generally paid on the first day of the month.
September 2026 Social Security payment dates
| Payment date | Who is paid |
|---|---|
| Tuesday, September 1 | SSI beneficiaries |
| Thursday, September 3 | People who received Social Security before May 1997, or beneficiaries receiving both Social Security and SSI |
| Wednesday, September 9 | Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 1st through the 10th |
| Wednesday, September 16 | Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 11th through the 20th |
| Wednesday, September 23 | Beneficiaries with birthdays from the 21st through the 31st |
The dates above follow the 2026 Social Security payment calendar. The September 1 SSI payment is scheduled for a Tuesday, and the regular Wednesday payments fall on September 9, 16 and 23.
Who gets paid on September 3?
The September 3 payment is for people who started receiving Social Security before May 1997. It also applies to people who receive both Social Security and SSI.
For people receiving both benefits, Social Security is paid on the third of the month and SSI is generally paid on the first. Because September 1, 2026, falls on a Tuesday, the SSI payment is scheduled for that day.
Social Security payments by birthday
Most people who began receiving retirement, survivors or SSDI benefits after April 1997 are paid based on their birth date:
-
September 9: Birthdays from the 1st through the 10th.
-
September 16: Birthdays from the 11th through the 20th.
-
September 23: Birthdays from the 21st through the 31st.
Your payment date is based on your birth date, not the date you filed for benefits.
What if your payment is late?
If your payment does not arrive on the expected date, the Social Security Administration recommends allowing up to three additional mailing days before contacting the agency.
First, check with your bank or financial institution to see whether the payment is pending. You can also sign in to your my Social Security account to review your payment information.
If the payment still has not arrived after the additional waiting period, contact Social Security through its official contact page or call the agency directly.
Important reminder
The payment schedule determines when benefits are issued, not how much you will receive. Your benefit amount depends on your program, earnings history, disability or survivor status and other individual factors.
For the most accurate information, check your bank account, payment notice and Social Security online account.
